Safety Precautions for Hydraulic Pumps and Motors

Hydraulics are used in a wide array of industries and equipment. Hydraulic systems are used in the automotive, aerospace, construction, manufacturing, agriculture, and healthcare industries. Hydraulics help perform tasks and functions that would otherwise be difficult to do.

When working with hydraulic systems, including hydraulic pumps and motors, it is important to remember to follow the proper safety precautions to avoid accidents and injuries, including the following:

#1: Only operate the system for its intended purposes.

You should never attempt to use a hydraulic system in a manner it was not designed to do. Doing so could result in system failure and potential injuries to the operator.

#2: Perform a detailed inspection before operating the system.

Inspect hydraulic hoses, connectors, fluid reservoir, etc. for signs of leaks, loose fittings, cracked hoses, low hydraulic oil fluid levels, and so on. If you discover any problems, repair them right away.

#3: If you discover a fluid leak, do not operate the system.

Fluid leaks can be difficult to trace back to their source. However, you should find and repair the leak. Leaks can make operating a high-pressure system difficult. Not to mention, excessive pressure on components could cause blowouts, especially at the source of the leak.

#4: Shut down the system immediately if it overheats, loses pressure, or stops working.

Continuing to attempt to operate the system could lead to further system damages and costlier repairs. When hydraulic components overheat and seize up, it can increase potential hazards for accidents and injuries.

#5: Wear the proper personal protection equipment (PPE).

Certain types of hydraulic systems may require the operator to wear various PPE, such as hard hats, safety goggles, work gloves, etc. Review what PPE is required and never operate the system without the proper PPE.

#6: Never put your hands, face, arms, or other body parts into or near moving components.

Fan blades, belts, and other such moving parts can cause bruises, cuts, and other serious injuries. When troubleshooting system problems that require the system to be in operation, look and listen from a safe distance.

#7: Follow the correct lockout-tagout procedures before beginning system maintenance.

You need to make sure that someone else will not accidentally turn the system on while you are performing maintenance. Additionally, make sure to release hydraulic pressure before servicing hydraulic pumps, motors, cylinders, etc.

#8: Verify you have been properly trained on how to use the system correctly.

Training and education of system operators are vital to ensure safety and reduce the risks of accidents. If you are not sure how to operate a system, never guess. Let your employer know you need to be trained.

#9: Never leave the hydraulic system unattended when it is in operation or running.

Leaving the system unattended for any period is never recommended. If something goes wrong, you need to be there to shut the system down immediately.

By using these tips, along with safety precautions for your industry, type of hydraulic system, and work environment, you can reduce the risks of accidents and injuries.
