Ideas About Controlling Heat in a Hydraulic System

Heat is generated whenever you use a hydraulic system to perform a variety of tasks, from lifting heavy objects with construction machines to operating different types of manufacturing presses. However, there can be certain things that can occur which result in excess heat generation.

If this problem is not addressed, it can shorten the lifespan of the system, as well as cause other damages to parts and components. Some of the more common ones are:

  • Internal Leakages
  • System Additions that Increase Heat Loads
  • Flow Restrictions
  • Inaccurate System Settings
  • Pump and or component wear
  • Too frequent relief valve blow off

In order to control heat levels and ensure the system does not overheat, you have several different options, as follows:

  • Increase the amount of heat dissipation in the system by making sure the volume of oil in the reservoir is at least equal to three times the volume of oil pumped per minute.
  • Reduce the amount of heat being generated as a result of the load on the system. For instance, reducing the maximum pressure required to operate the actuators in the system can help reduce heat generation.
  • Fix any internal leakages and replace any worn parts and components. When the system is operating correctly, less heat is generated.
  • Increase the reflectivity of externally exposed metal surfaces. Using a light-colored paint will reflect back more sunlight and stop heat transfer from the sun.
  • Invest in a larger reservoir and more oil on systems that have been upgraded or expanded, if this is not possible then a heat exchanger may be required but always bear in mind that this is a very inefficient use of energy.
  • Check relief valve settings.
