Understanding Hydraulic Pumps

Hydraulic pumps are mechanic devices used for converting mechanical power into hydraulic energy. The pump is designed to generate a flow to create sufficient power to overcome the pressures placed against it by the weight/load. For instance, in dump trucks, the hydraulic lift must create enough power to be able to lift the tipper body and any load there might be in it..

Regardless of the type of pump used, all share similar components as part of the hydraulic system, such as:

  • Cylinders
  • Pumps
  • Reservoirs
  • Filters
  • Fluid
  • Hoses
  • Valves
  • Motors

Furthermore, a hydraulic pump is designed to perform two specific functions. The first is to from the reservoir by creating a vacuum. The second function is to force the liquid into the hydraulic system through the pump outlet. It is important to note these types of pumps do not generate or create pressure. Rather, they produce liquid flow and/or movement to generate the necessary pressure as a result of resistance placed on the system by the load.

This basic principle can be applied to a wide variety of pumps, which include:

  • External-Gear Pumps
  • Internal-Gear Pumps
  • Vane Pumps
  • Piston Pumps
