Five Common Sources of Hydraulic System Contamination

When contamination gets into a hydraulic system, it can cause a wide range of problems. From system stoppages to complete failures and extensive hardware damage, the smallest amount of contamination can be costly. Most contamination in systems is found in hydraulic fluids and oils and comes from these five common sources:

  1. New Fluid/Oil: When adding new fluid or oil to the system, be careful to not get dirt and other debris inside. New oils are not necessarily clean oils. The storage methods used can also introduce contaminants into the oil.
  2. Internal Wear: Wear of components that make up the system will create contamination through normal wear and tear.
  3. Manufacturing Processes: There can be small particles left inside pumps or other components when they are manufactured.
  4. Repair Processes: Contaminants can get into the system during repairs through any exposed openings, moveable rods, and so on.
  5. Operating Environment: The operating environment where the system is used can introduce unwanted contaminants into the system. For instance, operating in dusty conditions can cause dirt particles to enter via tank breathers or exposed cylinder rods.

It is essential to identify potential sources of contaminants in your environment and utilize various methods to keep contamination levels low. One of the more effective methods is to use the right filters in the right locations within the system.
