A Quick Overview of Hydraulic Vane Pumps

Hydraulic vane pumps are one type of positive displacement pumps.. The pumps are relatively quiet and more tolerant of the type and viscosity of fluid supplied to them than Gear and Piston pumps.

How Does a Vane Pump Function?

There are three main types of hydraulic vane pump:

  1. Unbalanced fixed displacement vane pump.
  2. Balanced fixed displacement vane pump.
  3. Variable displacement vane pump.

The first works by way of an off centre rotor within a circular ring, as the rotor turns centrifugal force throws the vanes out against the inside of the external circular ring. The vanes form chambers in the space between the vanes, rotor and inside of the circular ring. As the rotor turns these chambers enlarge filling with fluid and then reduce, emptying fluid.

Balanced fixed displacement vane pumps work in the same way but within an elliptical rather than a circular ring. This allows two points of inlet and two points of outlet. The two pressure outlets balance each other meaning that there isn’t the side force on the shaft that is experienced with the unbalanced type.

The variable displacement vane pump works in the same way as the unbalanced fixed type but the outer ring can be moved by way of an adjuster against a strong spring so increasing or decreasing the maximum flow produced.

Benefits of Vane Pumps

Vane pumps can provide several benefits, including:

  • Low pressure pulsation as a more continuous flow than standard gear and piston pumps.
  • Rather more tolerant of contamination than gear or piston pumps.
  • Relatively low noise compared to standard gear and piston pumps.
