What Is a Hydraulic Cylinder?

hydraulic cylinder is an essential component found in many different types of hydraulic systems. They make it possible to perform tasks such as lifting heavy objects much easier. Hydraulic cylinders can be found on construction equipment, printing presses, manufacturing equipment, robotic arms, fire trucks, oil drilling equipment, mining equipment, forklifts, tractors, agricultural implements, mining equipment and much more.

Producing Hydraulic Cylinders

Some of the processes used to produce hydraulic cylinder parts and components utilize different types of machines. The steel has to be formed, bent, drilled, and machined to the right sizes. However, the assembly of the complete cylinder is often performed by hand.

Cylinders consist of several parts and components, including:

• Outer Cylinder Body or Tube: This is the housing that contains the other parts.
• Cylinder Piston: This is the part of the cylinder that divides the two oil chambers and on which hydraulic pressure acts.
• Piston Rod: This is the part that is connected to the piston and protrudes from the cylinder body and extends and retracts depending upon which side of the piston pressure is being exerted.
• Cylinder Seals: The seals help prevent fluid leaks to the outside and keep dirt and debris from getting inside the cylinder housing thereby preventing hydraulic fluid contamination. The seals on the piston prevent oil leaking from the high pressure side of the piston to the low pressure side.

How Does a Hydraulic Cylinder Work?

As the hydraulic fluid passes from the pump and into the hydraulic system, it resists flow and pressure is created. The pressure created moves the hydraulic piston to either extend or retract the piston rod depending upon which side of the piston the oil is being directed.

Thanks to hydraulic cylinders, any task that requires lifting, pushing, lowering, or pulling is made easier.
