HYD VANE PUMPS
Hydraulic Vane Pumps
The vane pump is one of the most complicated of all hydraulic pumps, but it can be highly effective in certain applications, such as automobiles and vending machines. Hydraulic vane pumps are manufactured in both single-chamber and double-chamber types. They may be either fixed displacement or variable displacement in design, and this flexibility supplements its list of benefits. However, only single-chamber pumps have variable displacement capabilities; these have screws that may be manipulated to alter the fluid flow. Invented in the late 19th century, these types of pumps have been found to be extremely useful in a wide range of industrial environments, and this will likely continue to be so into the foreseeable future.

How does a hydraulic vane pump work? Its design can be generalised as consisting of a central rotor, turned by the drive shaft, in which are mounted a number of vanes around the outside of the rotor. The rotor and vanes spin within a ring that in the case of fixed displacement vane pumps will be circular on the outside but cut elliptically on the inside. Variable displacement vane pumps tend to have a circular ring that in operation the more it is offset, through the use of an adjuster, from the shaft the greater the output flow.
Both types of vane pump operate along the same principles. The vane tips are pushed out to the ring by centrifugal force assisted either by springs or a pilot pressure to the base of the vanes. As the vanes move out, following the inside of the ring, to their greatest extension, whilst passing through the inlet phase, fluid filled cavities are formed. These cavities are then compressed during the outlet phase driving oil out of the pump. Vane pumps do create a small amount of suction however for optimum performance it is recommended that all vane pumps are operated with a flooded inlet.
Hydraulic vane pumps tend not to be suitable for applications that require the use of high-viscosity fluids, or that must generate high pressures. The relative complexity of design and number of components do make them a more expensive alternative to gear pumps. They remain popular for their highly efficient capabilities, high flow to size ratio, serviceability and low noise level.
At White House Products Ltd, we have an extensive selection of hydraulic vane pumps in a very wide variety of design specifications. Our online product catalog includes pumps from many leading manufacturers active today.
