In the late twentieth century LuK played a key role in the transformation from mechanical to hydraulic clutches.  Mechanical devices operated via cable were standard until the 1980s.  To smooth out gear changes and start-ups and reduce noise, hydraulically operated clutches were developed. LuK hydraulic components added quality and functions such as start/stop, speed control, hill-holding, and torque adjustment.
