Ultra Hydraulics was part of the Ultra management buyout of various businesses from the former Dowty group following its breakup.  

From having been a rather sleepy backwater of one of the great names of mid 20th century British engineering the new management turned the company into one of the most dynamic and enterprising businesses in the UK fluid power industry.    From its increasingly cramped Cheltenham factories it produced new innovative designs of pumps in both aluminium and cast iron.  It won awards and successfully exported the fully British manufactured pumps & motors all over the world.

Among the innovations were bearing supported motors for mowers, pump mounted load sense, priority port flow control and  accumulator charge valves.   They also developed the revolutionary 2PR high pressure cast iron pump and motor range.

Sadly, Ultra could not generate capital fast enough to sustain its development and was snapped up by Commercial Hydraulics who on completing the deal closed the factory in Cheltenham and moved all production to the former Orsta factory in Chemnitz, Germany with the assistance of Germany Government subsidy.

Soon after the purchase by Commercial they themselves were bought by Parker Hannifin who dumped much of the Ultra range retaining the 1PX and 2PR ones renaming them PGP511 and PGP620 respectively.  For a period some of the legacy 0PL, 1PL, 2PL and 3PL pumps were manufactured by Jihostroj in the Czech Republic and sold through the Parker network but even this has been discontinued.

However, many of the most talented from Ultra joined Dynamatic Technologies the Bangalore based licensee of Dowty Hydraulics and almost the entire range of Ultra Hydraulic products are available from White House Products Ltd either sourced from Dynamatic or Parker.   The strength of these products is in their very robust design and they remain an extremely reliable and important part of the White House Products product range.
