The primary component of a hydraulic cylinder is the barrel, which houses a piston connected to a rod. The cylindrical piston effectively forms two chambers that increase and decrease in size according to the movement of the piston. Fluid entering the barrel through one ports triggers the movement of the piston, forcing fluid through the port on the opposite end of the barrel.

Hydraulic cylinders are manufactured in single-acting and double-acting types. Taking a closer look at the inner workings of each hydraulic cylinder design.

With a single-acting cylinder, the fluid from the pump enters the barrel via a port and forces the piston toward the rod end (the end from which the rod protrudes). This is the forward stroke. The piston is pushed back to its original position due to the pressure exerted by a spring coiled around the rod, or by another force such as the weight of the load. This is called the retraction stroke.

By contrast, a double-acting hydraulic cylinder has not one but two fluid ports, positioned at each end of the cylinder, the blind end and the rod end. Fluid enters through the port on the blind end; this pushes the piston toward the opposite end of the cylinder barrel in a motion called the extension stroke. At this point, the directional control valve guides fluid through the port on the rod end, which pushes the piston back to its starting position; this is the retraction stroke.

It's worth pointing out that the design of the double-acting cylinder means that the retraction stroke is inevitably quicker than the extension stroke, which is undesirable for certain applications. Double-ended hydraulic cylinders solve this problem with a design in which two rods are attached to the piston, one on each side; the result is continuous, smooth motion of uniform speed.
